Frequently Asked Questions About Baby Sleep
- Written by Eva Beke, Founding Sleep Consultant at Sleepy Little Bubs
Does keeping a baby awake during the day help them sleep at night?
Usually not. Babies need adequate daytime sleep. Keeping a baby awake for too long can lead to overtiredness and more difficult settling. However, too much daytime sleep may reduce nighttime sleep pressure, so balance is important.
Should a 6-month-old sleep through the night without feeding?
Some 6-month-old babies can sleep for long stretches without feeding, while others still need one or more overnight feeds. Feeding needs should be considered individually and discussed with a health professional when necessary.
Is “sleep begets sleep” true for babies?
Only to a point. Adequate sleep can prevent overtiredness, but additional daytime sleep does not always improve nighttime sleep. Too much day sleep for an individual baby can reduce sleep pressure and affect bedtime or overnight sleep.
Can too much daytime sleep cause night waking?
It can for some babies. If a baby is having more daytime sleep than they need, they may take longer to fall asleep, wake for extended periods overnight or have a shorter night. Night waking can also have many other causes.
Will putting my baby to bed later make them wake later?
Not necessarily. Some babies continue waking at the same time regardless of a later bedtime. The result may simply be less nighttime sleep. Routine changes should consider the baby’s naps, total sleep, final awake period and natural morning wake time.
How can I tell whether my baby is overtired or undertired?
An overtired baby may be upset, difficult to settle or wake soon after falling asleep. An undertired baby may appear content, take a long time to fall asleep or remain awake for long periods overnight. Because the signs can overlap, look for consistent patterns over several days rather than judging one nap or bedtime.
Are baby sleeping bags safer than loose blankets?
A correctly fitted, hoodless baby sleeping bag can be used instead of loose bedding and can help keep a baby’s face and head uncovered. Always follow current safer sleep guidance and ensure the sleeping bag is the correct size and appropriate for the room temperature.
